Soneva Kiri wins Thailand Green Excellence Awards 2014 category Nature, Marine and Heritage.
The judges had the following comment about Soneva Kiri’s sustainability approach:
“If only all hotels were this forward-thinking! Not only is Soneva Kiri doing an incredible amount of good work in the preservation of the natural world, but they are actively trying to reverse the harm that has already been done, and are persuading other hotels to do the same.”
Created eight years ago by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Thailand Green Excellence Awards recognise and support sustainable and responsible travel and work to promote Thailand’s dedication
Her Royal Highness Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi, who is known for her charity work and enthusiasm and support for the awards, presented the award to Arnfinn Oines, Social & Environmental Conscience at Soneva.
Committed to sustainability
Soneva Kiri is a luxury resort that takes its carbon footprint seriously. The company is committed to leading the fight against climate change within the tourism sector.
It has, together with sister Soneva properties, raised USD 5.5 million to date through a carbon levy on its rooms. Through the SLOW LIFE Foundation it has implemented carbon reduction projects that will mitigate over one million tonnes of CO2. To date, these projects have improved the lives of 150,000 people as well as seen half a million trees of 90 different species planted.
Soneva Kiri has also banned imported bottled water, which as a result eliminates 50,000 plastic bottles from landfill per year. Together with other Soneva properties it has supported clean water projects through the SLOW LIFE Foundation that has helped over 600,000 people access safe drinking water or basic sanitation services.
