Soneva Resorts* won Condé Nast Traveler World Savers Award 2011 in the Doing it All, Small Hotel Chain category.
The judges from Condé Nast Traveler Awards praised Soneva Resorts for their work and said the company represented “the ultimate in high-end ecotourism, with audacious goals”.
They added: “Soneva Resorts puts to rest once and for all the idea that environmentally correct resorts appeal only to the crunchy granola set. Its properties are both sustainable and luxurious.”
It also highlighted the Carbon Sense Fund, which invests in carbon mitigating projects, and its Clean Water Projects fund, which has helped over 500,000 people in the developing world gain access to clean water in the last two years.The judging panel praised the company’s Social & Environmental Responsibility Fund that provides funds to social and environmental causes.
Through its sustainable development funds, Soneva Resorts supports a number of groundbreaking environmental projects around the world including the Soneva Forest Restoration project in Thailand, a UNESCO backed Biosphere Reserve in the Baa Atoll in the Maldives and the introduction of energy efficient cooking stoves in Darfur.
